Our Company History

In July, 1984, a family of two sisters and one brother, born and raised in Fernandina, banded together to purchase a local Chevron jobber. Chris, Gretchen and Young, (known to everyone as “Chipper”) changed the name to Florida Petroleum, and began the company that thrives today.

Their dad was an insurance agent who specialized in marine insurance, so the entire family was aware of, and involved in, the local shrimping industry. When they formed Florida Petroleum, the three siblings purchased a location that had a diesel fueling dock just south of the mouth of the Intracoastal. It was the combination of commercially available fuel and ice (a shrimping staple) that made stopping at Florida Petroleum a must for all the local shrimp boats and for anyone traveling the Intracoastal before they left port.

We continued to grow, and in 1987, Florida Petroleum purchased a Mobil Oil jobber in Jacksonville. That’s when the company really began to expand: Mobil is a product line that features industrial lubricants and can be sold anywhere, unlike Chevron and its assigned territories. Adding Mobil to our product line added the ability to service major industrial manufacturers statewide and beyond, and the business continued its expansion.

In 1998, Florida Petroleum added the Castrol brand of lubricants to the mix, catapulting our business to the forefront of the regional lubricant industry. Around that same time, we added to our presence in Florida with locations in Auburndale, followed by Jacksonville in 1999, expanding the efficiency of our service to state residents.

But the region’s businesses were growing as fast as we were, which led to the opening of our Pooler, Georgia facility in May of 2005, to service eastern Georgia.

In July of 2005, BPCastrol made Florida Petroleum their distributor for BP Heavy Duty Lubricants throughout Florida and eastern Georgia, adding even more products to our service base throughout the region. This quickly led to the establishment of our Orlando, Florida facility in July of 2006 and the birth of the Circle of Service for all our customers.
